Certified Civil Union


Effective June 1, 2011, pursuant to Public Act 96-1513, the Secretary of State will accept a certified civil union certificate, issued by a county clerk in the State of Illinois or any other state of the United States in which a civil union is lawful, to allow a party to the civil union to make a name change on his or her driver's license, state identification card, vehicle title or vehicle registration. Additionally, the Secretary of State will accept a certified same sex marriage certificate, issued by a state of the United States in which same sex marriage is lawful, to allow a party to the same sex marriage to make a name change on his or her driver's license, state identification card, vehicle title or registration.
