How Do I?
Apply for a job

Bid on Job Postings if I am not employed with the Secretary of State's office
Only current payroll employees, who meet bid requirements, may bid on job postings.
Remain eligible for employment after I take an examination and receive a passing grade
Candidates remain on the eligible list for employment referrals for a period of one year (twelve months) from the date of examination. To remain eligible for employment, examinations must be retaken at the expiration of the one-year period.
Complete a Secretary of State employment application
The Secretary of State employment application is designed to provide the Department of Personnel with specific information needed about candidates for employment. You may attach additional sheets in the same format as the employment application if additional space is needed. The application must be completed in full. Resumes are not accepted.
Receive veterans' points when I take examinations
Under Illinois law, veterans who meet eligibility requirements are entitled to additional points on examinations and veterans' preference. A veteran or member of the Illinois National Guard or any reserve component of the Armed Forces of the United States must establish veterans' preference by submitting copies of a certified DD214/215, NGB22 (or equivalent form) or proof of a service-connected disability from the United States Department of Veterans Affairs. Once the veteran has established status as a veteran with the Department of Personnel, subsequent employment applications need not include copies of such proof of service. In addition, if the veteran engages in additional service, which would alter the preference points on the examination after establishing veterans' status with the Department of Personnel, the veteran must submit a copy of a certified copy of the proof of service and mark the employment application accordingly.
Receive job benefits like health insurance, sick time and vacation time
Permanent full-time, permanent part-time and intermittent positions include such benefits. Intermittent and permanent part-time employees, however, receive pro-rated benefits based on the percentage of time worked compared to full-time employees. Intermittent and permanent part-time employees, for example, must pay for a portion of group health insurance benefits. Temporary employees are not eligible for benefits.
