The map collection staff at the Illinois State Library has found these web sites useful in their service to patrons, but represent only a cross section of the many map resources available via the World Wide Web. These web sites enhance and supplement resources that are available locally within the library. The Illinois State Library does not and cannot control the information content obtained from outside sources via the Internet.

County Index of 7.5 Minute Topographic Maps
USGS 7.5-minute Topographic Map Series of 1,071 sheets portrays the physical and cultural details of Illinois. Their large scale, 1:24,000, permits detailed and accurate display of natural and man-made features. The maps show many cultural features, including cities, towns, villages, and smaller populated places as well as highways, trails, railroads, pipelines, power transmission lines, dams, and airports. In rural areas, individual buildings are shown.

Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Flood Map Store
The FEMA Map Store provides a catalog and searchable database from which you can find online flood insurance maps by their type and the state, county or community.

Illinois Geographic Alliance
The IGA functions under the auspices of the Illinois Geographical Society and the National Geographic Society, and is made possible by the funding from the National Geographic Society and the State of Illinois.

Alexandria Digital Library Gazetteer Server
This is the new version of the ADL Gazetteer, based on the ADL Gazetteer Content Standard. Currently it contains: NIMA Gazetteer, set of countries and U.S. counties, set of U.S. topographic map quadrangle footprints, set of volcanoes, and set of earthquake epicenters.

The Columbia Gazetteer of the World
The Columbia Gazetteer of the World provides users with access to authoritative information on more than 170,000 places and areas around the world.

Geographic Names Information System
The Geographic Names Information System (GNIS), developed by the USGS in cooperation with the U.S. Board on Geographic Names (BGN), contains information about almost 2 million physical and cultural geographic features in the United States. The Federally recognized name of each feature described in the data base is identified, and references are made to a feature's location by State, county, and geographic coordinates.

GEOnet Names Server (National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency)
The GEOnet Names Server is the official repository of standard spellings of all foreign place names, sanctioned by the U.S. Board on Geographic Names. Covers foreign countries and regions outside the U.S. Produced by the National Geospatial-Intelligency Agency.

U.S. Gazetteer: 1990 Gazetteer Search Engine
This gazetteer is used to identify places to view with the Tiger Map Server and obtain census data from the 1990 Census Lookup server. This dataset is derived from the Census GICS and does not contain unincorporated place names.

Place, MCD (Minor Civil Divisions), County, and ZIP Code files from the 1990 and 2000 Census as well as 2000 vintage ZCTA (ZIP Code Tabulation Area) files.

Historical Maps Online
The intent of the Historical Maps Online project is to publish electronically the images of maps charting the last 400 years of historical development in Illinois and the Northwest Territory. Designed to appeal both to map aficionados and to educational institutions, the project aims to provide a broad spectrum of content, from expert scholarship of mapmakers and mapmaking to general knowledge about cartography and history.

Illinois Historical Aerial Photographs
Statewide aerial photographs were first acquired for Illinois from 1938 through 1941. This historical collection consists of more than 30,000 photographic paper prints, of which nearly 16,000 photos for 45 counties are online now.

Illinois Natural Resources Geospatial Data Clearinghouse
This site is a gateway to GIS data and imagery for Illinois. Available data sets and documentation (metadata) include: geology, water resources, nature preserves, wildlife areas, land use, political boundaries, roads, census information, Public Land Survey, Digital Raster Graphics files, and 1998/99 Digital Orthophoto Quarter Quadrangles.

Paul V. Galvin Library GIS Lab & Resource Center

The National Highway System
The National Highway System (NHS) includes the Interstate Highway System as well as other roads important to the nation's economy, defense, and mobility. The NHS was developed by the Department of Transportation (DOT) in cooperation with the states, local officials, and metropolitan planning organizations (MPOs). State maps of the National Highway System are available in Portable Document Format (PDF).

Map Libraries

Online Map Collections at The Library of Congress
The Geography and Map Division of the Library of Congress holds more than 4.5 million items, of which Map Collections represents only a small fraction, those that have been converted to digital form. The focus of Map Collections is Americana and Cartographic Treasures of the Library of Congress. These images were created from maps and atlases and, in general, are restricted to items that are not covered by copyright protection.

UIUC Map and Geography Library
The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign's map library is one of the largest, most comprehensive collections in the state of Illinois.

Illinois Department of Transportation
The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) has responsibility for planning, construction and maintenance of Illinois' extensive transportation network, which encompasses, highways and bridges, airports, public transit, rail freight and rail passenger systems. It operates with an annual budget of approximately $5 billion.

Illinois State Geological Survey Publications and Maps
Created in 1905, the ISGS provides scientific information to government, business, and the public. Our research and service programs encompass geologic mapping, water and mineral resources, environmental and engineering geology, geochemistry, and education.
