E-RICH: Illinois State Library's Electronic Resource Service
E-RICH FY2010 OFFERINGS (July 1, 2009 through June 30, 2010)

What is E-Rich?

E-Rich is a program that assists ILLINET* member libraries in securing electronic information resources by providing Try-It! Illinois and the Electronic Resource Expo (ER-XPO). By providing these experiences, ILLINET member libraries will better serve their communities as they make informed decisions concerning future electronic resource purchases.

As of FY2011, E-RICH will no longer offer subsidized or negotiated pricing for electronic resources. These services will no longer be offered.

The Illinois State Library will continue its commitment to totally subsidizing and providing FirstSearch, from OCLC, Inc. at no charge to ILLINET member libraries.

What are electronic resources?

According to Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules, Second Edition, 2005 Update, an electronic resource is: "Material (data and/or program(s)) encoded for manipulation by a computerized device. This material may require the use of a peripheral directly connected to a computerized device (e.g., CD-ROM drive) or a connection to a computer network (e.g., the Internet)." This definition does not include electronic resources that do not require the use of a computer, for example, music compact discs and videodiscs.

What is the purpose of E-Rich?

By facilitating E-Rich, the Illinois State Library strives to enrich the lives of Illinois citizens by promoting the availability of electronic resources and access to information in Illinois libraries.

To assist in the selection of electronic resources, the Illinois State Library offers Try-It! Illinois, an annual statewide electronic resources trial October 1-November 30. Try-It! Illinois celebrated its ninth year in the Fall of 2008. The trial offers the 5,000+ ILLINET member libraries, their staffs and their communities, a wonderful opportunity to survey and evaluate a wide variety of electronic resources. Thanks to the collaboration between the Illinois State Library and the participating electronic resource vendors, there is no charge for accessing these databases during Try-It! Illinois.

To further assist in the selection of electronic resources, the Illinois State Library's 2009 Electronic Resource EXPO (ER-XPO), which features Try-It! Illinois electronic resource vendors will be held Wednesday, December 9, 2009, beginning at 9:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. at the Schaumburg Township District Library, 130 Roselle Road, Schaumburg, Illinois. The day will provide opportunities for individual consultations with vendor representatives as well as vendor facilitated focus sessions allowing for Q&A in a lab setting. There is no charge to attend the ER-XPO. Registration is available at http://www.librarylearning.info/events/?eventID=6865.

Vendors, please direct any questions to Gwen Harrison at 217-785-7334, or gharrison at ilsos.net regarding Try-It! Illinois and the ER-XPO.

*ILLINET member libraries are those academic, public, school and special libraries recognized as members in good standing by their regional library systems and the Illinois State Library. This compliance automatically makes them members of the Illinois Library and Information Network (ILLINET), a statewide consortium of more than 5,000 libraries.

What services are offered through E-Rich?

As of FY2011, the focus of E-RICH will be to provide ILLINET member libraries real time experiences with relevant electronic resources via Try-It! Illinois and the Electronic Resource Exposition (ER-XPO).

The Illinois State Library will continue to provide at no charge to all ILLINET member libraries FirstSearch, from OCLC, Inc. This resource will be totally subsidized by the Illinois State Library.

Philosophy: FirstSearch from OCLC, Inc. does have broad appeal, possessing application to all ILLINET multi-type libraries. This resource serves to equal the playing field in the world of access to electronic information.

Which Electronic Resources are available through E-Rich in FY2010 (July 1, 2009-June 30, 2010)?

FirstSearch

FirstSearch, from OCLC, Inc., provides library staff and end users access to a full collection of reference databases. With FirstSearch, materials in your library's collection are highlighted in search results from an abundance of leading databases.

The Illinois State Library continues its 16th year of support to FirstSearch access for all ILLINET member libraries. FY2010 databases available at no charge include: ArticleFirst, Clase/Periodica, eBooks, Electronic Collection Online (ECO), ERIC, GPO Monthly, MEDLINE, PapersFirst, ProceedingsFirst, World Almanac--Full Text, WorldCat, and WorldCatDissertations.
