The National Historical Publications and Records Commission (NHPRC) has awarded the Illinois State Historical Records Advisory Board (ISHRAB) a grant of $58,291 to develop and disseminate a strategic plan to address statewide historical records needs and issues. The ISHRAB is composed of a cross section of the Illinois historical records community and serves as the arm of the NHPRC at the state level. In addition to reviewing Illinois records grant proposals made to the NHPRC, its goal is to facilitate NHPRC-supported cooperation among historical records depositories and other information agencies within the state.

During the grant project's first year (1999) a consultant will prepare a report assessing Illinois historical records needs and issues. From that foundation the Board will draft a strategic plan to address identified needs and issues. The draft plan then will be widely distributed to identified stakeholders through the Internet and in the form of paper copies. Over April-May 2000, public meetings will be conducted in Chicago, Springfield, and Carbondale to discuss the draft plan and solicit opinions. Public input in turn will be incorporated into the final strategic planning document which will outline a schedule of action. As with the earlier draft the final plan will be posted on the Internet and distributed widely in paper form. All Illinois historical records stakeholders will be urged to participate in this process.
