ILLINOIS STATE ARCHIVES
Illinois Regional Archives Depository (IRAD) System
The Illinois State Archives offers 17 internships in the Illinois Regional Archives Depositories (IRAD) System. IRAD depositories are located at Eastern Illinois University, Illinois State University, Northeastern Illinois University, Northern Illinois University, Southern Illinois University–Carbondale, University of Illinois–Springfield, and Western Illinois University. These depositories preserve official records of local governmental agencies which have permanent legal, administrative, historical, or other research values. These records are maintained as a resource for governmental authorities, scholars, and the general public.
The IRAD internship introduces graduate student interns to the functions of an archives and allows them to develop basic archival and research skills. Intern duties include arranging and processing records, preparing descriptive inventories, and handling reference on county, township and municipal records. Interns must be enrolled in a graduate program in history, political science or closely related field, and accepted into a graduate program at one of the seven depository universities. The Illinois State Archives will pay each intern $11 per hour for 20 hours of work per week for a monthly income range from $880 to $1,012 during the period August to May. The Illinois State Archives also provides up to $2,500 for each intern's tuition and fees for the academic year.
